POLLSPEAK

Pollspeak is a watchdog organization dedicated to keeping college sports polls (and computer-rankings) honest, or at least questioning those that seem to be flawed, uneducated or have an unreasonable bias.  Why?  Because polls affect teams' TV exposure, finances, recruiting and national championship hopes.

Voters and pollsters must be held accountable.

Week 3

Jon WilnerPEOPLE'S PICK: Bad Voter of Week 3 -- Jon Wilner   (posted 9/10/08)

Name Good Votes Bad Votes Net Bad Votes
Jon Wilner  125  728  603

While Jon Wilner was named Worst Voter of the Year for 2007, this is a new season, and much like a football team, we have high hopes that things will be better this year.  So far, the fans aren't buying it.

To reiterate, the "People's Pick" is only the opinion of visitors of our site.  Pollspeak won't be giving official awards until week four of the season at the earliest.

We can assume that the 125 good votes came from fans of Missouri or Alabama, whom he alone ranked #1 and #2 respectively.  However the bad votes could have come from fans of any number of the teams he alone ranked lowest on his week 3 ballot:  USC (#5), Georgia (#7), LSU (#15), Texas (#22), and Kansas (#24).  Shoot, we could even throw in Auburn fans just for the #2 Alabama vote.  One thing we know by now is that Wilner likes to live on the extreme.

Chris FowlerPEOPLE'S PICK: Good Voter of Week 3 -- Chris Fowler   (posted 9/10/08)

Name Good Votes Bad Votes Net Good Votes
Chris Fowler  266  57  209

Chris Fowler's week 3 ballot received the most net good votes this week, which is nice to see.  It's nice to see because it didn't go to somebody who simply ranked a specific team the highest.  Instead, Fowler won by producing a ballot in line with both the voters and the fans.  He has BYU a little lower than most and Arizona State a little higher than most, but obviously nothing to draw much ire from the fans.

AP LogoDid They See The Game? - Week 3  (posted 9/10/08)

Pollspeak doesn't give its Bad Voter awards this early in the season, but if we did, it might go to Maurice Patton.  He is not the most extreme voter, but last week in "Did They See The Game?", we pointed out a few voters (including Patton) who failed to rank winners of games over the losers.  Every one of those voters cleaned up their ballots this week... except Patton, who is the only one who still has:

  • Tennessee (#20) over UCLA (Unranked)

  • Clemson (#17) over Alabama (#21)

He now ranks ECU (#23) over Virginia Tech (#24), but he still has the other team ECU beat, West Virginia, ranked higher at #16.  (Along with Bob Hammond and Marcus Fuller).

Once again, we'll point out that Patton's votes go against the posted AP guidelines. (Not just once, but six times so far this season.) We have asked Mr. Patton for his reasoning, but he has yet to respond.

By the way, if you want to check for these issues yourself, try using Pollstalker's Team Comparison Feature.  Just pick two teams to compare and run the report.  Click here for an example.
